DFOKonControl150

What are the events?
There are 5 friendly, straightforward orienteering events in parks in North West Kent suitable for everyone from complete beginners to experienced orienteers. A great way to learn orienteering or improve the skills you already have.

What equipment do you need?
Nothing special. Old trainers if it looks muddy: something waterproof if wet. A compass is useful but not essential. Full leg cover rather than shorts for the woodland events and, of course, a watch is very useful for the score course.

FEES:
Adults £4, Juniors £1
Family/group competing together £4,
Dibber Hire £1,
Free dibber hire for DFOK members
Extra maps £1

The Event:
There i
s a “score” course suitable for everyone. The aim is to find as many control flags as possible in the 45 minute time limit. There will be between 20 and 30 controls at each event; you are not expected to locate them all. Most of you will visit between 8 and 15. If you get stuck on one, juts move on to the next one. Flags with a number in the 60’s will be very easy to find and suitable for complete beginners and young juniors. Control flags with a number in the 70’s will be a little harder, and the 80’s are as hard as possible to keep experienced orienteers happy. Younger juniors up to about age 14 can run a “line” course of Yellow orienteering standard that starts around the same time as everybody else (or can choose the 45 minute score course).

Some of the parks are small, but the planning will ensure that experienced orienteers and fast runners who think they can get all the controls in the time limit will need to run between 5-8km (straight line distance, actual distance will be greater).

Help for beginners: The course is suitable for complete beginners with no experience. DFOK club members will be available to help you. If you have any questions before the event please email newcomers@dfok.co.uk

On the main website there are some beginners pages which might help newcomers before coming to the event.

Start Time & Registration:
Mass Start at 11.00
No need to pre-enter or be a member of an orienteering club, just turn up on the day, but please email chairman@dfok.co.uk if you are bringing a group of 6 or more so we can ensure enough maps are available. Please visit registration between 10.15 and 10.45 to buy a map and hire a dibber (which records your time electronically) if you don’t already have one. You will be given your orienteering map at registration so you can plan your route and ask any questions.

Timing and prizes:
After you have finished and returned your dibber, you will be given a printout showing your times between controls. On the score course, you will score 1 point for every control visited, and 1 point deducted for every minute or part minute you are late. We will aim to announce the winners in various age/sex categories within 15 minutes of the finish and present some prizes.
