British Schools Orienteering Championships 2016

On Sunday 19th November, David LeFevre took 12 Hackney school children up to Sutton Park in Birmingham to compete in the British School Orienteering Championships, several of whom were DFOK members or regular competitors in the KOL and NWK leagues. Holly Page, who had also been entered for the event, joined them there.

It was a cold and wet day and for some of the orienteers, it was the largest event they had ever been to. For all the Hackney school children, it was their first time at the BSOC so nerves were inevitable. Despite this, they competed well and achieved excellent results.

For the year 8 girls, both Myla Stiling and Ruby Andrews had excellent runs, finishing 8th and 10th out of 29 respectively and for the year 7 girls, Immy Sheaff, in her first line course, finished a very creditable 28th out of 36. In the competitive year 12 girls race, Holly Page was 4th out of 13, finishing about 75 seconds out of the medals but with the fastest time on 5 of the legs.

For the year 11 boys, Tel Robinson did well to finish 18th out of 28, and in the year below, Sam Parker did equally as well to finish 34th out of 43rd. The year 9 boys had one of the largest numbers of competitors with 67 and so all 5 Hackney boys did well to finish just out of the top half. Cosmo Siddons was 37th, Fynn Bearfoot 40th, Alfred Duchars 41st, Linus Sheaff 44th and Joseph Dickson 46th. Finally, Hackney had two competitors in the year 8 boys, who also competed well, with Joseph Gibson finishing 31st and Jake Hodkinson 45th out of 55.

Overall, the Hackney City Academy School team managed a very creditable 9th and hopefully everyone not only enjoyed the experience but learnt lots from it too!! Below are some links to photos taken on the day.
